FAQ

Why is it called Ariadne?

The name comes from Greek mythology: Ariadne gave Theseus the ball of thread that let him find his way out of the labyrinth. The idea is that the app can be that thread.

How do I get back from the map to the previous screen?

Shake your device.

How do I zoom on the map?

With VoiceOver on, flick up with one finger to zoom in and down to zoom out. Without VoiceOver, pinch with two fingers.

If I move the map to the right I hear “left”, and vice versa. Is that correct?

Yes. With two or three fingers you move the map as if it were paper under your device: drag it left and the area further right appears on the screen, and vice versa. The same goes for up and down. If the map has north at the top, you hear east, west, north and south instead of right, left, ahead and behind.

What do the sounds in the app mean?

Each sound tells you that something has happened. Follow the link to hear it.

  • Valid GPS direction: GPS starts providing a direction of movement: you started moving, or the system detects movement.
  • Invalid GPS direction: GPS stops providing a direction of movement: you stopped, or the system cannot detect it.
  • Favorite pointed: as you turn the device, the favorite is right in front of you, at twelve o’clock.
  • Map downloaded: the map is ready and you can start exploring it with your finger.
  • Footsteps: your finger crosses a minor street.
  • Bicycle: your finger crosses a medium road.
  • Passing car: your finger crosses a major road.
  • Birds: your finger crosses a park.
  • Water: your finger reaches the sea, a lake or a large river.
  • Map locked: as you zoom out, the map stops rotating and puts north at the top.
  • Map unlocked: as you zoom in, the map rotates and shows what is ahead of you at the top.
  • Favorites sorted: you shook the device in the favorites list: the list is sorted again by distance.

Ariadne does not announce favorites when the screen is locked

Check these points, inside and outside the app:

  1. In the app Settings, Favorites section, choose the alert type (voice, sound, vibration) and the distance. I suggest at least 30 metres.
  2. In the Device section, turn on Background and Allow screen lock.
  3. In iOS Settings, open Ariadne GPS, set Location to Always and turn on Background App Refresh.
  4. Make sure the favorite is active: the others are not announced.

Do I have to activate favorites to get alerts?

Yes, only active favorites trigger an alert. The others can still be checked on the Home button that shows the nearest favorite. To activate them all at once, open the favorites list, choose Actions and then Activate all.

Can I save a favorite away from any street?

Yes, any point can be a favorite. Away from a street the app does not save a street name or number, but alerts work as usual.

How do I back up my favorites?

If you bought the in-app package, open the favorites list, choose Actions, then Share all, and send the file to yourself. To restore them, just open that file with Ariadne GPS.

Alternatively, connect the device to a computer and open Finder on a Mac, or Apple Devices on Windows. In the Files section, copy all the files starting with POI.sqlite from the Ariadne GPS folder. To restore, put the files back.

Why do some functions ask me to make a purchase?

Some functions are part of a package you can buy in the app. Without it Ariadne keeps working, with all its other functions. The package includes:

  • customizing favorites and using preset profiles;
  • exchanging favorites with other people and importing GPX and OSM files;
  • opening the details of a favorite directly from Home;
  • quickly saving your position as a favorite;
  • sending a favorite to TomTom.

How do I open the details of the favorite shown on Home?

With VoiceOver, move the focus to the favorite button, swipe up or down to the Favorite Details action and double tap. Without VoiceOver, touch and hold the button. In the same way, the Add favorite button offers Quick save. These functions are part of the package you can buy.
